Bringing the Godzilla Roar into the 21st Century

first_imgMusic experts are using microscopes to take the iconic roar into the 21st century.Since 1954 the Godzilla roar has been sending shivers down the backs of audiences. There are few sounds as recognizable worldwide as the iconic roar. So when Ethan Van Der Ryn and Erik Aadahl were tasked with creating a new roar for the 2014 Godzilla movie they had big shoes to fill. The original 1954 roar was made by Japanese composer Akira Ifukube who used a leather glove, double bass, and Pine tar to create the sound. The result was fantastic but audiences in 2014 demanded a little more. Ryn and Aadahl began their search by recording screeches and calls from various wildlife but “nothing quite felt right”.Ryn and Aadahl then turned to objects including ironing boards & rusty car doors but they still couldn’t find anything that would suit their needs. That’s when they decided to turn to microscopes. Scientific microscopes offer users the ability to capture sound waves that humans can’t normally hear. The sounds when slowed down can create some awesome results including the 2014 Godzilla screech. The noise even triggered fearful tourists to call the police to Universal Studios. The following video sheds more light on how it was made. What do you think of the new roar? Share in the comments below.Stories via:NPR: What’s In A Roar? National Register of Citizens: Kolkata-born carpenter jailed in Assam

first_imgA Kolkata-born carpenter, based in Assam, is the first victim of the National Register of Citizens in south Bengal. Ashgar Ali, 50, born in the Park Circus area of central Kolkata, has been incarcerated in a west Assam detention centre for an anomaly in his father’s name. Family members in Kolkata furnished various papers on June 2 to establish that Mr. Ali was born in Kolkata. For nearly two years Mr. Ashgar Ali alias Sheikh Ashgar has been jailed in Goalpara detention centre, following an anomaly in his father’s name.Unusual surname“Our father’s name is Sk Moral. But since Moral is an unusual surname and he was often questioned if he is actually a morol (village head), he changed his name to Md Jarif. Hence, some of the papers identify him as Sk Morol, while some as Md Jarif,” explained Arshad Ali, his younger brother. While Mr. Jarif filed an affidavit in a Judicial Magistrate court in the city in December 2015, declaring that he is a Kolkata-born Indian national, his son was detained in Guwahati on July 14, 2017 for the difference in his father’s name.“Ashgar Ali’s son is in Class VIII and wife is suffering from acute arthritis…they are in a terrible situation. The problem occurred as the family is entirely uneducated,” said Zishan Ali, a close relative of Mr. Ashgar Ali, from Guwahati.Three years“We hear that that according to the Court order, if his foreign nationality cannot be established in three years, he will be released. But for one’s father’s mistake, is it reasonable to detain a person for three years?” asks Mr. Zishan Ali. Mr. Ashgar Ali, who has working in Assam for over two decades now, has been jailed in the Goalpara detention centre in west Assam. But it is “actually Goalpara district jail,” said Mr. Zishan Ali.Mr. Ashgar Ali’s parents and other family members live in abject poverty in a Park Circus slum in central Kolkata. His two brothers work as tailors, while the 83-year-old father suffers from a stomach tumour. The mother, Jubeda Begum, is frail and losing sight in both eyes. She cried incessantly while talking about his son. The family is worried about the fresh NRC in Bengal. “We have done everything that is possible to rectify the arbitrary name change of our father. But could you tell us what else we should do to ensure that the entire family does not go to jail like our brother, if NRC is indeed started in Bengal?” asked Afrin Begum, one of Mr. Ashgar Ali’s four sisters.last_img read more

Roger Federer quite sure of Bhupathi-Bopanna’s chances of a medal at London Olympics

first_imgRoger Federer does not have a clue about the turmoil that rocked Indian tennis before the Olympics. But he is quite sure that Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna have a decent chance of winning a medal at the Games that start on Friday.Bhupathi and Bopanna had a bitter feud with the All India Tennis Association after refusing to play with India’s no. 1 doubles player Leander Paes and insisting on being sent as a team for the Olympics. The seventh seeds will start their campaign against Max Mirnyi and Alexander Bury of Belarus.Paes, on the other hand, has been paired with a lower-ranked Vishnu Vardhan and the unseeded duo will start off against the Dutch team of Robin Hasse and Jean-Julien Rojer.”I would love to play any of the Indian teams, but Bopanna and Bhupathi are closer to us in the draw,” said Federer, who would be pairing with Stanislas Wawrinka to defend the men’s doubles gold.”I don’t know why they (Bhupathi and Paes) didn’t play together, but Bopanna is a very good player himself and I’m sure on grass they will have a chance to do very well,” added the Swiss, who won a record-equalling seventh Wimbledon title last month.Federer, a strong favourite to win the singles gold after defending champion Rafael Nadal’s injury-forced pullout, said getting the doubles gold is equally important for him.”Obviously winning the Olympic gold with Stan in Beijing was one of the most incredible feelings I’ve ever had on atennis court,” said Federer.advertisement”Hopefully, we can do well again. We haven’t played much doubles of late. Thank God we are seeded, that helped us out a little bit in the draw,” he added.last_img read more

A TRIBUTE TO THE HEART OF THE TEAM…

first_imgThe Eagles Mens 20’s have suffered enormously as a team in recent weeks. Their son, their friend, their brother, their team mate, Kieran Luland was killed in a tragic car accident in late January.Team mate Anthony Cowan was also involved in the accident, not long after he had attended the Australian Under 18’s camp and the accident sent shock waves around the Australian Touch community. The Eagles players, their team management, friends and family banded together, supporting their young men, as well as their mentor and assistant coach, Ricky Luland, Kieran’s father. On Monday night they honoured their lost team mate in the best way they could, with the 2006 National Touch League Mens 20’s title.Wearing leg bands with the words ‘Kieran Luland, 8, Kakadu’, the crowd who had stayed for the final were witness to a team intensely focused and committed to each other, a team with a desire to honour their friend and a team that performed in such a way it brought tears to the eyes of all.In honour of ‘Kakadu’ (Kieran’s nickname) and his number 8 jersey, the Eagles amazed the crowd with their silky smooth skills and incredible pace. With great support from family members and local viewers, the side capped their most difficult time together with an 8-5 title win.For those who stayed to watch the presentations and the celebrations, they were like no other gone before them.Anthony Cowan was named as Player of the Final, scoring two touchdowns and setting up several others, a remarkable feat considering the time he spent in hospital recovering from injuries sustained in the accident. He also spoke as team captain, explaining to all how Kieran was the heart of their team, how they had played for him, that they knew he was there watching. The depth of passion and respect these young men held for Kieran was made incredibly obvious. It was fantastic to see the family and friends supporting their side, the young children following them around like heroes, the cameras and videos well in hand. For the team, the meaning in each handshake and hug, the relief, the passion, the emotion as all let their guards down and hugged and cried together was an honour to witness. For Ricky Luland, the moment was understandably emotional, as he hugged and spoke privately with all of the players. It was the added emotion of caring deeply for the group of boys that have been playing and growing together for several years, seeing them develop as a team that can now call themselves national champions. For coach David Scholes, himself a quiet achiever, the win was a result of the hard work of his team, the way they had pulled together and stuck by each other through the most difficult of times. For the spectators, it was a privilege to see the hearts of these players, these coaches, these family and friends and it will never be forgotten. It was an honour to the team and most importantly, it was an honour to Kieran.last_img read more

first_imgSolskjaer has ‘no excuses’ after Man Utd fall to lowly Newcastleby Freddie Taylor19 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveOle Gunnar Solskjaer says there are “no excuses” for Manchester United after their 1-0 loss to Newcastle United on Sunday. The Red Devils poor season went from bad to worse with the defeat at St. James’ Park, caused by Matty Longstaff’s first goal for Toon.United now have nine points from eight Premier League games. They were without a number of senior players, including Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial, but Solskjaer refused to blame the result on their absence. He told Sky Sports: “We’re disappointed. We did lack quite a few key players but that’s no excuse.”The players worked hard and ran their socks off but at the moment we’re in a place we’re not used to. Some of the boys lack a little bit of composure and we don’t create enough chances to win a game of football.”They stay together as a team but we don’t create.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Paul OGrady Reacts To Court Decision As Yorkshire Beagle Breeding Farm Given

first_imgPaul O’Grady, TV presenter & star of the popular TV show ‘For the Love of Dogs’, has condemned a Court of Appeal decision denying Cruelty Free International permission to appeal a High Court ruling which paves the way for the expansion of a beagle breeding facility in East Yorkshire. The appeal was the last opportunity to prevent innumerable dogs from being bred inside the Bantin and Kingman Ltd (B&K) breeding farm in Grimston, East Yorkshire, before being sold to UK and EU laboratories where they will endure crude and cruel experiments.Last June Cruelty Free International applied for permission to appeal against the High Court decision, which disappointingly has now been rejected.Paul O’Grady says: “Cruelty Free International has fought for over six years against the development of the B&K beagle breeding farm. This is an incredibly disappointing outcome and a real tragedy for all those who care about the welfare of dogs. Despite strong opposition from local residents and the animal welfare community, thousands of dogs have effectively now been condemned to a life of misery, destined to suffer and die in experiments.”In 2014 the Home Office decided B&K did not have to provide outdoor space to dogs, despite EU regulations stating that such space should be provided where possible. The government department justified the move on the scientifically unproven basis that the dogs would be at risk of exposure to airborne toxins if they went outside – which they speculated would make them unsuitable for toxicology (poisoning) experiments.Around 90% of the dogs in UK laboratories are used for toxicology tests; the approach therefore means that dogs used in these sorts of tests could virtually never be given outdoor access. The public will be shocked to learn that the Home Office will now be able to grant an exemption in any case it wants, just by citing an alleged risk of infection.Michelle Thew, CEO of Cruelty Free International, says: “We are dismayed by the verdict. Our challenge was all that stood in the way of the expansion going ahead and the suffering of countless dogs. We believe that denying the dogs outside access was simply a convenient get around for the problem of noise to local residents which had been an obstacle to the company getting planning permission. We will now press ahead with our campaign for a full ban on dog experiments.”Cruelty Free International has led the campaign against the development of the B&K beagle breeding farm since 2011 and successfully prevented two previous applications to expand the facility. The nationwide move to save the #YorkshireBeagles has received widespread public support, and is backed by MPs and a host of celebrities including Paul O’Grady, Ricky Gervais and Jilly Cooper.last_img read more

Do Toothless Offenses Like The Bengals Ever Recover

1973OAK22.914.024.426.1-1.7 2006OAK10.53.011.618.1-6.5 2000DET19.214.519.920.1-0.2 2001SEA20.06.022.021.1+0.9 All is not lost here for the Bengals. Eight of those teams that didn’t score an offensive touchdown in their first two games actually went on to score more on average in their remaining games than they did in the previous year. But all of these gains were modest, in many cases less than a point. The biggest rebounders were the 1990 Pittsburgh Steelers, who averaged 16.6 points in 1989, failed to score an offensive TD in Weeks 1 and 2, and then averaged 19.3 points for the rest of the year. The news is less rosy when you look at three most recent examples: The 2016 L.A. Rams, the 2006 Oakland Raiders and the 2006 Tampa Bay Bucs. The inauspicious starts for these three were a dark omen for what was to come. The trio combined to go 10-38.The hope of modest gains isn’t much for Bengals fans to cling to. This team was expecting its offense, which ranked 24th in the NFL last year, to get much better — not to plateau or fall off a cliff. Since history tells us to expect that teams in the Bengals’ position will score an average of three fewer points per game than they did in the previous season, and Cincinnati scored 20.3 points per game last year, we’d expect the team to post about 17 points per game in 2017. In the 16-game era,1Not counting 1982 and 1987 seasons, which were shortened by strikes. teams that average between 16 and 18 points per game are 871-1,635-6 for a .348 winning percentage that translates to between five and six projected wins this year for the Bengals.Of course, the Bengals could have just run into hot defenses in their first two games, against the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans. But even the great 1985 Bears gave up 22 offensive touchdowns that season, or 1.4 per game. Getting shut out from paydirt in two straight games is epic futility no matter who you’re facing. Cincinnati might pin Week 2’s offensive fiasco on the fact that is was playing a Thursday night game on short rest, but that likely had no effect given that in games through Week 2 since 2014, teams have actually averaged more points per game on Thursdays (23.3) than in the season as a whole (22.6).Some expressed worries that the Bengals’ attack would suffer after the team let 35-year-old Pro Bowl tackle Andrew Whitworth leave for the Rams in free agency, but the Bengals attempted to compensate for the loss by picking up even more skill players in the draft. Owner Mike Brown and head coach Marvin Lewis selected world-class sprinter John Ross to be a game-changing deep threat with the ninth overall pick. And in the second round, the club added 226-pound running back Joe Mixon, who ran a 4.5 40-yard-dash at his Pro Day.And those players were added to a mix that already included three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Andy Dalton, perennial Pro Bowl wideout A.J. Green and one of the league’s most efficient scorers in tight end Tyler Eifert, who since 2000 has the third most touchdowns per catch (minimum 20 touchdowns) among tight ends. The team has 11 offensive players who are home-grown first- or second-round draft picks. All of which makes the offense’s ineptitude even more perplexing. Which explains why the team took drastic measures: This is the first time in the Bengals’ 50-year history, all of which has been spent under the guidance of the Brown family, that an offensive coordinator has been fired during the season. But the bigger issue may be Dalton, who currently ranks last in the NFL in QBR with a rating of just 10. The league average QBR through Week 2 is 49; last year, Dalton’s was 52.3. There have even been rumblings about benching Dalton, including from a former NFL Executive of the Year.Either way, Cincy has no excuses this week — at least, that is, no excuses for not scoring a touchdown. The Bengals are in Green Bay facing a Packer defense that ranks 25th in yards allowed per play through Week 2 after finishing 28th in 2016.But perhaps the Bengals can look to one of their NFC counterparts for offensive inspiration. The Bengals were the 24th team to go through their first two games without scoring an offensive TD, but the 25th team, this year’s San Francisco 49ers, joined the club just a few days later. After a fortnight of grim, incompetent offense, Brian Hoyer and the Niners exploded for five touchdowns and 39 points in Thursday night’s loss to the Rams. Then again, when it’s only Week 3 and you are already trying to emulate the feats of the Niners, something has gone terribly wrong. 1988CLE19.04.521.126.0-4.9 YEARTEAMFULL YEARGAMES 1-2REST OF YEARPRIOR YEARDIFF AVERAGE POINTS PER GAME 2004TAM18.88.020.318.8+1.5 Teams that started like the Bengals didn’t rebound wellHow the 22 past teams that didn’t score an offensive touchdown in Weeks 1 and 2 fared over the rest of the season, compared to the season prior 2006TAM13.21.514.918.8-3.9 1978BAL14.90.017.021.1-4.1 1990PIT18.311.519.316.6+2.7 2001WAS16.01.518.117.6+0.5 1996TAM13.84.515.114.9+0.2 Excluding the 1976 Tampa Bay team, which was in its first year as a franchiseSource: Pro-Football-Reference.com 1985BUF12.56.013.415.6-2.2 1977TAM7.43.08.18.9-0.8 1985PHI17.93.020.017.4+2.6 1970NOR12.31.514.122.2-8.1 1982KAN19.614.021.221.4-0.2 1977BUF11.43.012.817.5-4.7 1975NOR11.81.513.511.9+1.6 1974PHI17.38.018.922.1-3.3 1990NOR17.17.518.518.8-0.3 The Bengals entered this year as playoff contenders with a retooled offense that was considered one of the fastest units in the NFL. But two games into the season, they’ve kicked three field goals. And that’s it, that’s all the points the team has scored. Cincinnati’s inability to score a touchdown in its first two games (both losses) has led to the quick dismissal of offensive coordinator Ken Zampese in his 15th season with the team.It may not sound like that big a deal to be held without a touchdown for the first two games of the season, but going back to 1970, this has only happened 15 times prior to 2017. Another eight teams registered only a return touchdown, failing to score with their offense. The 23 teams that got left at the starting gate should not give Bengals fans much confidence in this year’s unit. These offenses would go on to average 17 points per game for the remainder of the season. If you include the two clunkers each team had in Weeks 1 and 2, the group finished the season with a paltry 15.6 points per game. When compared to their previous season’s scoring output, teams — not counting the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who were an expansion team and so did not have a previous season — declined by an average of three points. 2016LAR14.04.515.417.5-2.1 1997IND19.68.021.319.8+1.5 read more
