Bilaspur/Raigarh: Calling the grand alliance of opposition parties a “Mahamilawatbandhan” (alliance of adulteration), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah here claimed that if at all the grand alliance got a majority, it would have a new Prime Minister from Monday to Saturday.Addressing election rallies in Bilaspur and Raigarh districts of Chhattisgarh on Thursday, Shah said on one side, there was the BJP-led NDA and its allies closely working under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the other side, there was the “Mahamilawatbandhan” which was not yet sure about its PM face. The BJP chief said that he had come to know about how the grand alliance planned to work it out if it came to power. “On Monday, Sharad Pawar would be the PM, then it would be the turns of Mayawati, Akhilesh Yadav, Deve Gowda, Stalin and Mamata Banerjee till Saturday. The nation would go on holiday every Sunday.”Underlining the achievements of the Modi government in five years, Shah said its most prominent achievement was to secure the country. “During the UPA rule, terrorists intruded into the country freely and returned unharmed after killing our jawans and the Centre did nothing. But when the Pulwama attack took place during our tenure, Modi destroyed the terror hub in Balakot with air strikes,” he said.Slamming the Congress for questioning the air strikes, the BJP president said after the retaliation, there was gloom not only in Pakistan, but also in the office of Rahul Gandhi. He hit out at senior Congress leader Sam Pitroda for calling terror attack a fault of four-five men and suggesting dialogue as the solution. Stating that Gandhi could engage with terrorists, but not the BJP, Shah said, “If a bullet comes from Pakistan, we would reply with a cannon.”He also alleged that the Congress’ ally, National Conference, was demanding a second prime minister for Jammu and Kashmir and promised to flush out every single infiltrator once the BJP returned to power. “Till a single BJP worker is alive, no one can separate J&K from India,” added Shah.He also lashed out at the Bhupesh Baghel government in the state for allegedly discontinuing with most of the welfare schemes started by the Raman Singh dispensation in the past. Shah said that despite securing loan worth Rs 10,000 crore, the Congress government wasn’t paying salaries. In an apparent dig at alleged extortion of cement and liquor traders, the BJP leader said a new tax, called the “Baghel tax” had been introduced in the state. chandni-chowk-s30p01delhi-lok-sabha-elections-2019exit poll results 2019harsh vardhan First Published: May 22, 2019, 2:42 PM IST | Edited by: Ahona Sengupta Soon after a more than a month-long seven-phased Lok Sabha elections came to an end on Sunday evening, majority of the Exit Polls predicted the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government to return to power with a comfortable majority. The News18-IPSOS survey forecast a win for the NDA on 336 seats in total while it predicted 82 Lok Sabha seats for the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). In Delhi, the survey predicted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may repeat its 2014 sweep or may at least win six of the seven seats available. It gave the Congress one seats and none to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The survey further predicted that the Chandni Chowk seat may go to the BJP’s Harsh Vardhan – the incumbent MP on the seat. The Chandni Chowk constituency, considered to be Delhi’s ‘gold’, is also one of the most historically important constituencies of India. The parliamentary constituency, which has witnessed a dominance of the Congress since its formation, is witnessing a clash between two veterans this time.Contesting for the seat is the four-time Lok Sabha MP from Delhi, Jai Prakash Aggarwal, who is pitted against veteran Harsh Vardhan. Debutant Pankaj Gupta of the Aam Aadmi Party is making this a triangular fight.Till 2008, Chandni Chowk used to be the smallest parliamentary constituency in the country in terms of area. It only housed assembly segments in the Old Delhi area falling in the Delhi government’s central district namely, Chandni Chowk, Ballimaran, Matia Mahal, Ajmeri Gate and Paharganj. Today, the Walled City comprises 30 per cent of the entire constituency. The areas in the constituency are densely populated and typically crowded with narrow walkways. In 2008, when a delimitation exercise was undertaken, other north Delhi neighbourhoods such as Model Town, Tri Nagar, Wazirpur, Shalimar Bagh and Shakur Basti were added.Planned areas such as Civil Lines, Delhi University and government colonies in Timarpur comprise around 25 percent of the constituency. Unauthorised colonies like Adarsh Nagar and Jahangirpuri and slum clusters such as Shakur Basti and Inderlok account for another 25 per cent to 30 per cent of the area.Further, almost 18 per cent of the population in Chandni Chowk is constituted by merchants, businessmen and Vaishyas. The constituency also has a sizeable Muslim population that is mostly concentrated in the Old City. In this cramped up constituency, the traders, along with the high-caste Brahmins are traditionally known to vote for the BJP, while the Muslim community is known to favour the Congress. Besides, civic issues have always remained burning before the polls.Javed, 28, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, runs the famous Qureshi Kebab corner. He complains that the roads that are already congested have been further narrowed down after the Municipal Corporation opened a parking space at one side of the lane that connects the Metro station with the mosque. Most of the people that News18.com spoke to complained that BJP’s sitting MP and Union Minister Harsh Vardhan has neither visited the constituency nor developed the area. Residents also claim that the Congress had worked more. “Congress’ Kapil Sibal used to walk around often and check on people,” a local resident said. When asked about the reason behind Sibal’s defeat, Javed responded, “It happened in the Modi wave.” In the past, the seat used to be a Congress stronghold, but the BJP wrested it in the last general elections. In 2014, Vardhan had defeated AAP’s journalist-turned-politician Ashutosh by over one lakh votes while Sibal finished at third. The AAP has fielded a newcomer Pankaj Gupta, a software professional, who is contesting an election for the first time.Sixty-year-old Shaukat, a barber who runs a salon shop in one of the narrow lanes of the Jama Masjid, said he would vote for the two-term MP Jai Prakash Agarwal “only to get the Congress back in power”. Praising the AAP government’s work on government schools and hospitals, most of the residents of the area suggest that even the police must come under the Delhi government. “People do not understand what the state subjects are. For any criminal wrongdoing, people still hold the Delhi government accountable. What’s the point if we can’t question who we elect,” asked Shahrukh, a 23-year-old engineer and a migrant from Uttar Pradesh. While traders’ woes dominate the discussion, affordable housing, parking and jobs are key for residential areas in other parts of the Chandni Chowk constituency such as Model Town, Pitampura, Mukherjee Nagar and Shalimar Bagh. In Adarsh Nagar, Jahangirpuri and Shakur Basti that mainly comprise the unauthorised colonies and ‘jhuggi-jhopri’ clusters, basic facilities such as piped water supply, sewerage and proper roads, remain the key issues. In a stark contrast to Chandi Chowk and Old Delhi areas, other parts of the constituency have a different story to tell. And that’s where the issue of regional identity runs deep.As one enters Asia’s largest fruit and vegetable wholesale market in Azadpur, something that is immediately noticeable is that the place and the people are always on the move. The Mandi which works 24×7 was busy even when the mercury average was over 40 degrees and the majority of labourers and loaders working here are Purvanchalis. While Purvanchalis may appear to be a potential and crucial vote-bank, very few of them have voting rights Delhi.Rakesh, a shop owner from Himachal Pradesh, said, “while most of the workers in the Mandi are from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, very few of them actually live in their own houses and only those who do, have voting rights.”Another shop-owner said that only the Purvanchalis who have bought places in nearby slums have voting rights and that again doesn’t mean they tend to vote in one direction. Identity politics, the shop-owner says, hardly matters now as the voter has become smart. Not more than 500-600 metres away from the Azadpur market is Lal Bagh. Majority of the people living in this slum are also Purvanchalis and either work in the Mandi or nearby factories. Here too, people seem to be favouring the BJP on PM Modi’s face value and not the candidate.Suryabali (36) runs a shop in the locality and has been living in Delhi for at least the last 20 years. He belongs to Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh and had left his hometown in search of work when he was 11-years-old.“It’s about Modi here, the community factor doesn’t actually come into play as most of the poor people will vote for the BJP, it’s only the rich and elite who faced problems under Modi government, will vote against him,” said Suryabali. In Suryabali’s response, the nationalism narrative also found resonance when he said that the security situation has improved under Modi.

Jaganmohan ReddystadiumVijayawadaYSR Congress First Published: May 26, 2019, 9:47 PM IST Vijayawada: Five years and over 200 events later, the Indira Gandhi Municipal stadium here will play host to the swearing-in ceremony of Andhra Pradesh CM designate YS Jaganmohan Reddy on May 30, but officials are in a race against time to accommodate a large number of people expected for it.A large number of YSR Congress Party supporters from all 13 districts of the state are expected to throng the venue that day. A senior YSR Congress party functionary said the stadium, which can accommodate only 25,000 people in the gallery, was chosen out of sentiment.”YSR (Reddy’s father YS Rajasekhar Reddy) also took the oath at a stadium in Hyderabad. Security is also a reason for choosing this venue,” he said, adding that party leaders have been advised not to bring too many people.Krishna District Collector A Md Imtiyaz told PTI that extensive arrangements have been made to accommodate around 40,000 people in the cricket stadium, including the ground.”To avoid over-crowding at the stadium, provisions for live-streaming of the event through LED TVs at important locations of the city would also be made,” he said.Traffic arrangements without affecting normal life would be put in place, while provisions for drinking water, fans, and air coolers would also be made, he added.Vijayawada Police Commissioner Dwaraka Tirumala Rao said common people would be allowed till the venue is full, after which entry would be restricted.Situated adjacent to a hillock, the 25,000 seater stadium hosted a One Day International between India and the West Indies in 2002.Workers at the stadium maintained that staircases leading to galleries had worn-out, upper balconies did not have shade and people have to sit on concrete slabs. However, one of the organisers said arrangements would be made for those sitting in the upper balcony of the gallery to have some shade and added that the ceremony would be held without hiccups just like how over 200 events were hosted in the last five years.Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekar Rao, besides party MLAs, MPs and dignitaries from neighbouring states would attend the ceremony, according to the district administration.Reddy also invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the event when he met him in the national capital Sunday. The YSRCP swept to power in Andhra Pradesh with a landslide victory, bagging 151 seats in the 175-member Legislative Assembly and 22 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats.
Story TimelineHere’s a closer look at the Galaxy Note 8’s camera bumpGalaxy Note 8 release date tipped with a new feature mysteryGalaxy Note 8 could be on track for another early reveal If this is indeed the Galaxy Note 8, then the content of the tweet itself might be a tad disappointing. The tweet is for Samsung’s Exynos 8894 SoC, which is already used in the Galaxy S8 and S8+. That would mean that the Galaxy Note 8 would use the same processor instead of something newer like it always does with its Galaxy Note line. Then again, it might also be understandable. For one, given how Samsung will be launching the Galaxy Note 8 early, there isn’t much lead time to integrate a new processor. But perhaps more importantly, Samsung will want to play it safe this round, given then reputation of the Galaxy Note 7. Fortunately for us, we’ll know soon enough whether that strategy will work in Samsung’s favor, with the Galaxy Note 8 tipped to be unveiling on 23rd August. Do what you want. #Exynos will get things done. Learn more about #Exynos8895: https://t.co/xjBw74E39o pic.twitter.com/zzxH7NE3QU— Samsung Exynos (@SamsungExynos) July 13, 2017 Has Samsung mastered the art of misdirection? In a tweet by its Exynos account, it showed a smartphone that looks less like a Galaxy S8 and more like a Galaxy Note 8. At the same time, however, the tweet hasn’t been taken down, so it’s definitely not accidental, which does make you wonder if it is really the Galaxy Note 8 or something generic that Samsung has whipped up to tease and confuse the masses. On the one hand, it could just be a modified photo of the Galaxy S8+, which is expected to be pretty close to the Galaxy Note 8 in size. The Galaxy S8+’s screen is 6.2 inches while the Galaxy Note 8 is speculated to have a 6.3-inch display. But if you weren’t trying to depict the Galaxy Note 8, why make that change? The smartphone shown here has the same Infinity Display but seems to have less curved edges. That is similar to how the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7’s edges didn’t curve as much compared to the then “Edge” models. The top bezel, too, seems a tad narrower than on the Galaxy S8, and the corners of the phone less rounded.
Creating synth music is almost one half actual music and one half stage performance. And the tools needed to create such music isn’t exactly accessible, much less portable. When ROLI came out with its BLOCKS system, it was clear that the company was on to something. But as with any first gen product, BLOCKS experienced some growing pains. Now, ROLI is addressing some, though not all, of those with a second gen Lightpad Block M and the latest NOISE 3.0 update that promises to make creating music a more pleasurable experience. Back when we reviewed the first Lightpad, our fingers came out a bit sore. Not because we became truly addicted to the process of using it to create music. It was more because the build quality and sensitivity of the block left some things to be desired. As if hearing and answering our prayers, the new Lightpad M addresses exactly that. It now sports a silicone surface layer that is not only thicker than the previous Lightpad’s rubbery top, it is also more sensitive and softer. ROLI promises it puts the Lightpad M on par with the Seaboard RISE, which is exactly what we had hoped for.ROLI also gave its NOISE software a bit more love. It already addressed the lack of exporting functionality back in the May update. In version 3.0, NOISE gets the ability to launch and edit clips, some new acoustic sound packs, and integration with Apple’s popular music-making GarageBand app.One complaint that ROLI is unlikely to address is the price. In fact, it has gone just a wee bit higher. Whereas the original Lightpad cost, and still does, $179.95, the new Lightpad Block M goes for $199.95. It might not be that much alone, but the BLOCKS system is meant to be used with other blocks, bringing the total cost ownership a lot higher. Then again, the added cost might be well worth it to give your fingers some much needed comfort.
Story TimelineThese HomePod missing features are already frustrating meApple HomePod teardown has good news and badThis HomePod multi-room tip saves waiting for AirPlay 2 Apple’s HomePod may auto-tune itself to suit wherever it’s placed in a room, but there’s a physical reason why you should still be careful about where you put the smart speaker. The Siri-powered music player is one of Apple’s more cohesive designs of late, smaller than you might expect from photos, and clad in a textured – but acoustically transparent – fabric sheath. However, it seems there are still some issues that Apple didn’t see fit to warn us about. HomePod sits on a silicone foot – indeed, the base is the only place you’ll actually find the Apple logo – but if you lift it up to look at it you might find there’s an ugly ring left behind on whatever furniture it was placed on. That, unfortunately, is what several owners are now discovering. The Wirecutter spotted the issue, as did Pocket-lint, and Apple confirmed that it is, indeed, a known tendency of the HomePod. It depends on what the surface is it’s placed on, of course, with certain types of wood being problematic. After a period on a wooden side table, for example, or an oiled butcher-block countertop, white circular rings were found. According to an Apple spokesperson, “the marks can improve over several days after the speaker is removed from the wood surface.” If they don’t, or if you’re impatient, the Cupertino company’s advice is a little more drastic. “Try cleaning the surface with the manufacturer’s suggested oiling method,” so the suggestion went, which might be a little more intensive than you’d have hoped. It’s worth noting that, in our own testing with HomePod in a number of places and on a range of different surfaces, we’ve not observed any issues with left-behind rings. That includes painted shelves, tile, glass, and sealed wood. All the same, it may give you pause as you consider not only the sound quality of a particular location, but whether HomePod might not play entirely nicely with the furniture there too. It’s unclear at this stage what the exact problem is. Other devices – indeed, other Apple devices – have silicone feet, but don’t struggle with the same issue of leaving a mark. It could well be a chemistry issue with Apple’s supplier of the HomePod’s base, and thus something the company could correct on the production line. Certainly, it’s not sufficient to dampen our enthusiasm for HomePod as a musical speaker. Siri’s performance still leaves us a little less impressed, at least when you roam outside controlling Apple Music by voice, as we noted in our HomePod review. All the same, it’s another thing to bear in mind as you decide where to situate your smart speaker. Update: Apple has a new support document with guidance on where best to put HomePod, how to clean and maintain it, and other details. It specifically refers to the white mark issue, which Apple says “is not unusual” for silicone bases:“It is not unusual for any speaker with a vibration-dampening silicone base to leave mild marks when placed on some wooden surfaces. The marks can be caused by oils diffusing between the silicone base and the table surface, and will often go away after several days when the speaker is removed from the wooden surface. If not, wiping the surface gently with a soft damp or dry cloth may remove the marks. If marks persist, clean the surface with the furniture manufacturer’s recommended cleaning process. If you’re concerned about this, we recommend placing your HomePod on a different surface.” Apple

The folks at Dish have a device called AirTV, a device that shares a name with a device that they’ve now re-named “AirTV Player.” This new AirTV device is a box that connects to a cord that picks up local TV signals via an antenna. With this device, you can watch local TV channels “for free” with an app on mobile devices and smart TVs. Why would you want this?1. If you want local TV channels (local to wherever the AirTV box is active) on your various devices – like phones, tablets, and smart TVs. This box allows you to open an AirTV app and it’s just like you’re watching TV, with broadcast commercials and everything.2. If you have a SlingTV subscription and you want to have the functionality described above. It’s suggested by Sling that “AirTV is optimized for Sling TV,” but there’s no contractual obligation between the two. What does this cost? There’s no monthly fee for the basic functionality described in #1 of the first section of this article. If you’re using an AirTV Player, it includes apps like Netflix, which cost a certain amount per month just like they would anywhere else. But AirTV itself does not cost any monthly fee.AdChoices广告There are now two devices on the AirTV product roster. One is the AirTV Player Bundle for $130, the other is AirTV for $120. The AirTV Player Bundle works with a single TV and is its own smart TV box, with a remote and everything. The AirTV is a box that requires you have devices that can run an AirTV and/or SlingTV app. Why AirTV instead of AirTV Player Bundle? The AirTV Player Bundle costs ten dollars more because it’ll make your dumb TV work like a smart TV using the Android TV platform. That means you’ll get access to other apps like Netflix and AirTV on a single television set, with a remote control. The new AirTV is not relegated to a single TV set. It has no remote control and does not provide a platform for any non-smart TV. Instead, you’ll plug AirTV in, and you’ll have access to AirTV from any AirTV app. AirTV apps can be used by smartphones, tablets, and smart TV platforms. You’ll be able to access AirTV with your connected apps anywhere. This is apparently an unlimited, forever-available system, accessible wherever your mobile devices are connected to the internet. Both AirTV devices require an antenna. You can use the antenna that AirTV sells separately, or you can use your own OTA antenna, both should work just fine.Wasn’t this available before?Sort of. Before it required that SlingTV be used to run AirTV. Now there’s a separate AirTV app, and there’s no obligation to pay for SlingTV or use SlingTV in any way at all. Uber has added a panic button to its mobile app for US customers. We’ve known since the company’s April announcement that it was planning to add a new safety feature to the app this summer, one that directly dials emergency services for drivers who fear for their safety. This is one of multiple safety measures the company is taking to address criticism. Uber made a big announcement in mid-April detailing new safety features, not the least of which would be a dedicated Safety Center and 911 Assistance. The newly added panic button covers that latter feature, making it possible for users to directly dial 911 in the event they require help. The button is found within that Safety Center menu. When pressed, the app will prompt the user to make sure they want to dial 911. If the user confirms that, the app will send the user through to emergency dispatchers. Some emergency centers in select markets will receive details about the trip and the rider’s location as a way to help get officers to the vehicle. That data sharing feature is limited to certain cities, including Denver and Nashville. The panic button aside, the Safety Center includes info on Uber’s driver screening process, how insurance is handled, guidelines for the riders, and more. The company previously launched a panic button within the mobile app, but it was limited to India. Uber plans to partner with the National Emergency Number Association to help connect Uber callers with their local 911 emergency center in the US.
Story TimelineDJI Mavic 2 leak teases swappable cameras and 360 sensing Previous rumors have already spilled the beans on many of the new model details. DJI is readying a pair of drones, the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and the Mavic 2 Zoom. The primary difference is in the camera. We’re now seeing at high-res exactly what those cameras will look like. German consumer electronics site GFU prematurely shared the shots before taking them down again, DroneDJ reports, along with a little information about what makes each model special. As expected, DJI is targeting those wanting higher-quality video and photos from their drones. To that end, the Mavic 2 Pro will have a Hasselblad camera with a 1-inch CMOS sensor. That will support a 10-bit color profile, for what DJI says will be four times the amount of color levels per channel, when compared to what the existing Mavic Pro can record. The upshot, DJI suggests, is more flexibility when it comes to post-production video and photo editing. AdChoices广告As for the Mavic 2 Zoom, as the name suggests the focus will be on getting closer to the subject. It will have a smaller, 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor than the Mavic 2 Pro, but will be DJI’s first model with a zoom. That combines a 2x optical zoom (24-48mm) with a 2x digital zoom, for a 98mm total. However, even using the digital zoom, DJI says you’ll still get lossless recording when at Full HD resolution. Otherwise, the two drones are expected to be functionally the same. That means 31 minutes of flight time, and a top speed of 45 mph, according to earlier leaks. They should be able to transmit live video back to their operator from up to five miles away, at 1080p resolution. 360-degree collision awareness is baked in, too, along with the latest version of DJI’s tracking technology. Indeed, all that’s really left to leak is the price. With the existing Mavic Pro coming in at around $1,100, it seems likely that these new Mavic 2 models will land somewhere around the same. DJI’s two new drones have leaked again, with high-resolution images of the DJI Mavic 2 models breaking cover early. The drone-maker is expected to take the wraps off the two new flying cameras in an event in New York City later this week.

The phone was put on sale today on pre-order, and users can ONLY pay in either Bitcoin or Ethereum (BTC or ETH). Story TimelineHTC Blockchain phone “Exodus” could be greatHTC Exodus blockchain phone: this is what it meansWhy HTC smartphones continue to fail [UPDATE]HTC Exodus Blockchain phone launching with CryptoKitties this year The cost of this device is either 0.15 BTC or 4.78 ETH, for now. That’s approximately $958.80 or $952.94 at the time this article is set to be published. As HTC still pays its employees in USD (and/or other local fiat currency), we’ll expect those prices to change from time to time – but we’ll see! This smartphone will be shipping in December of 2018. The phone has a 6-inch Quad-HD+ display and it runs Android O – Oreo, which is not the newest version of Android. That’s a bit odd, but it likely has to do with the sort of security measures the phone has in play. The phone is using a secure enclave with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 – that wouldn’t stop the Android Pie software, but still – they’re using top-notch Android security measures on this hardware. On the back is a pair of cameras: “12MP + 16MP main camera with high quality zoom” and the front has a pair of cameras as well: “8MP+8MP dual front camera with natural Bokeh.” This phone has “HTC BoomSounds Hi-Fi edition” audio – which we can assume means the speakers are front-facing and potentially very powerful, but we can’t yet be sure. We’re also not entirely sure what the front of the phone looks like, since it’s not yet been shown officially. This phone features Edge Sense 2 – which means it can sense the pressure with which you press in on its sides. There’s a 3500mAh battery inside, 6GB – DDR4x RAM, 128GB UFS 2.1 internal data storage, and fast charging support. There’s just one single Nano SIM capability inside, 4G LTE, and features like VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling. This phone does not appear to support 5G data connectivity. AdChoices广告Perhaps most important is the inclusion of HTC’s own Zion Wallet. This is a hardware wallet – inside the phone itself – that allows the user to securely store their digital currency. At this time we know only of a few different cryptocurrencies that are supported, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin. This phone also features Social Key Recovery, which sends pieces of a code to trusted contacts – these pieces when combined become a key to open a lock.
You can say what you want about Mozilla’s attempts at earning money but you can’t criticize it for lack of trying. In fact, the non-profit open source organization has a knack for throwing out ideas and experiments and getting users to be their guinea pigs. Or brave testers, if you will. Those experiments all came from the Firefox Test Pilot garage, which is sadly now closing up shop. Mozilla assures fans of the browser, however, that experiments will stop. In fact, it promises there will be even more. The way most people live in web browsers these days, you’d think it’d be a playground for all sorts of fun things you can think of to do with web browsers. But alas the golden age of browser extensions seems to be over and browser makers seem to be more concerned about outdoing each other in battery life benchmarks.Mozilla, however, dared to be different. Its Test Pilot program has given birth to not a few experimental features, some of which have graduated into final features. There’s the private and encrypted Send file sharing, data breach Firefox Monitor, Activity Stream, Screenshots, and more. Mozilla said that users have jumped on these test pilots with enthusiasm, helping provide feedback and causing a faster development cycle for those features. So why is Mozilla shuttering Firefox Test Pilot then? Because Mozilla now believes that the “Culture of Experimentation” is something that the entire organization should embrace, not just those in the Test Pilot program. Curiously, it still has Mozilla Labs, it’s one-stop shop for cutting edge web technologies, including AR/VR and IoT. Whether those will become independent features, too, only time, and a lot of testing, will tell.
READ: Flickr deleting photos starting tomorrow: How to prepareThe last day — based on the original announcement — to save your images was February 4. Some users panicked and called for Flickr to give them more time. In addition, some users who attempted to save their images reported technical issues that prevented them from archiving. The company has agreed to do extend the free period and the new deadline is March 12. The 1,000 free image limit remains in place, however, and users who need to store more than that will need to pay $50 for a Pro membership.Flickr will remain a standalone image sharing community under SmugMug, which bought the platform from Yahoo. Users who remain over the free limit without upgrading will have their oldest images deleted until they’re reduced to the 1,000 image cap. This is problematic for many users who took advantage of the previous 1TB free storage offering to backup a large number of photos. Some users report having thousands of images of the platform but are reluctant to pay the new fee. Flickr provides an option to download their archive, enabling them to upload the images to a different cloud service or store them locally on a drive. Story TimelineNew Flickr app supports Samsung Gear VRFlickr bought by SmugMug photo hosting serviceMajor Flickr update has absurd Free Tier Though Flickr gave users an early warning about its plan to reduce free photo hosting, there were some users who inevitably missed the news. The company revealed last year that following its SmugMug acquisition, it would reduce free accounts to a limit of 1,000 photos. Customers who wanted more would either need to pay or save their images before they were deleted.
If you have been on the fence about buying a Tesla Model S and have been considering the cheapest Model S option, it is about to go away. Tesla has confirmed that as of September 24 the cheapest Model S of them all will be no more. The budget Model S is the Model S 75 in rear-wheel drive. After the axe falls on that model the paired down Model S lineup will include the 75D, 100D, and P100D models. All three of those models are dual-motor AWD units. Tesla had noted back in July it planned to discontinue that model, but had offered no timeframe when the announcement was made.Perhaps Tesla wants to differentiate the Model S and the new Model 3 lines from each other with less overlap in pricing. That base Model S started at $69,500 and the big benefit of it over the base Model 3 at $35,000 is that there is no wait on the Model S. Most Model 3 buyers aren’t getting the base model.Adding on a few Model 3 options that most wouldn’t want to live without take the price to the mid $50,000 range. Tesla is no stranger to ditching car models. It has in the past discontinued the mid-range 85 kWh Model X SUV and the rear-wheel drive 90 kWh Model S.There is no indication that Tesla plans to cut the price of the new base Model S to make it more affordable. Odds are Tesla wants people looking for a cheaper EV to go with the Model 3, it needs to sell hoards of those cars. Luckily for Tesla, demand for the Model 3 is booming.SOURCE: Business Insider
Jaguar is reviving one of its most iconic models, the stunning D-type racing car, with a limited new production run of just 25 planned. It’s the handiwork of Jaguar Classic, flush from the success of its efforts to bring the final eight Jaguar E-type cars to life, along with nine new XKSS models that will be completed this year. It comes 62 years after the last D-type from the original run was completed, back in 1956. This new car is an engineering prototype to show just what Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works is capable of. 25 cars will be made, completing the original intended run of 100 vehicles, of which Jaguar only produced three-quarters back in the 1950s.It’s the same strategy that saw eight stunning E-type Jaguars produced in 2014-15, filling the missing serial numbers in the process. A couple of years later it began the same process but for the XKSS – notably Steve McQueen’s favorite car – of which twenty-five were intended to be made. A fire in 1957 destroyed both the final nine cars being built, along with all the tools and fabrication equipment needed to make them. Fast-forward roughly sixty years, and Jaguar Classic reconstructed the destroyed tooling and filled in the nine gaps. The same painstaking process will be followed for the new D-type racers, with the automaker’s engineers building every aspect to the same, original specifications from the 1950s. Those lucky enough to be allowed to buy one of the cars will get to choose between two body styles. On the one hand, there’l be the 1955-specification Shortnose D-type; on the other, the 1956-specification Longnose version. The engineering prototype is one of the latter variants, with a tail fin behind the driver’s seat, a wide-angle cylinder head, and quick-change brake calipers. As you’d expect, demand is easily going to outstrip supply for these cars. Jaguar Classic is likely to use the same sort of qualification criteria as it did with the reborn E-type and XKSS, choosing buyers based on their existing classic collections and dedication to the brand. As for pricing, that’s also unknown. Still, a 1954 D-type Works is going up for auction in March, with an estimate between $12-15m. Jaguar Classic D-type Gallery While most of the automaker’s attentions are lavished on new vehicles, like the 2019 E-PACE crossover SUV we recently drove, the Jaguar Classic team has a different remit. Tasked with maintaining a supply of authentic parts, performing specialist servicing, and even sourcing full cars for Jaguar and Land Rover owners, it’s a small but growing team at the company’s facilities in Coventry, UK. In recent years, however, its attentions have turned from maintaining original Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles, to the so-called New Original continuation cars. Built by hand, to the original specifications of the classic vehicles, they’re based on the authentic blueprints of the cars. The first “new” D-type has already left the garage.
To be fair, and as Tesla itself points out, some of the exploits may exist in theory but present little in the way of real-world risk. Fooling the automatic wipers, for example, requires putting a TV right in front of the car. That’s unlikely to be a situation Tesla drivers find themselves in. AdChoices广告Another hack, which gained access to the car’s steering system meanwhile, was addressed in a security update, Tesla says. Released as two components, in 2017 and 2018, it apparently patched the “primary vulnerability” which was exploited, the automaker says. “In the many years that we have had cars on the road, we have never seen a single customer ever affected by any of the research in this report.”As cars get smarter, the driver’s job evolvesTesla also commented on what’s arguably the most real-world-applicable exploit, where lane-recognition was fooled by specific markings on the ground. There, patches of tape placed on the road were sufficient to confuse the neural network, either by masking a road lane marking completely, or by introducing a fake, non-existent lane. “In this demonstration the researchers adjusted the physical environment (e.g. placing tape on the road or altering lane lines) around the vehicle to make the car behave differently when Autopilot is in use,” Tesla said in response to the lane-recognition research. “This is not a real-world concern given that a driver can easily override Autopilot at any time by using the steering wheel or brakes and should be prepared to do so at all times.”Tesla’s response to the lane-recognition exploit once again puts the reality of Autopilot and how some mischaracterize it under the microscope. Despite ambitious promises by the automaker that, in the not too distant future, your Tesla will be able to drive you entirely autonomously, Autopilot as it is today remains resolutely a Level 2 system. That means driver assistance, and that the person behind the wheel is still responsible for making sure the car is being driven safely, whatever technologies are also involved. Just how attentive any driver making use of features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping is, compared to someone operating their vehicle entirely manually, remains an unanswered question. What seems clear, though, is that the potential hazards such drivers must be attuned to is evolving. The version of the reality that the car’s systems see, and base its decisions upon, and the version the human operator sees can differ significantly, whether that’s tape on the road or something else. Which sensors are essential for autonomous driving? The research – and specifically its commentary on computer-vision – highlights another lingering question around autonomous driving. Tesla is on record as insisting that the current array of sensors on its cars should be sufficient for Level 4 or Level 5 self-driving. At that point, the human behind the wheel should be able to leave safe operation of the car entirely to the vehicle’s systems. Notably, though, no current Tesla has a LIDAR, or laser range-detector. Instead the automaker uses cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors. Experts in the segment are divided over whether that’s going to be sufficient for truly autonomous driving, and this research adds to the existing concerns that computer vision alone may not be enough. “Tesla uses a pure computer vision solution for lane recognition, and we found in this attack experiment that the vehicle driving decision is only based on computer vision lane recognition results,” the Tencent researchers conclude. “Our experiments proved that this architecture has security risks and reverse lane recognition is one of the necessary functions for autonomous driving in non-closed roads. In the scene we build, if the vehicle knows that the fake lane is pointing to the reverse lane, it should ignore this fake lane and then it could avoid a traffic accident.”Of course, with truly self-driving cars still likely to be years away from reaching the market, Tesla – and other automakers – still have time to work on the issue. All the same, the EV-maker is unique in offering vehicles with a paid fully-self-driving option, even though it’s not active today. That makes it all the more vital that Tesla figures out the computer vision question, lest it frustrate early-adopters who have already paid for a feature they’ve been promised. Tesla’s Autopilot could be misled by rogue markings on the road, security researchers have found, though the EV-maker insists that it’s no concern if the driver-assistance technology is used correctly. Although focusing on Tesla’s systems, the investigation raises further questions about the resilience of systems that will form the basis of truly autonomous cars in general, when such vehicles become available. It’s the handiwork of the Tencent Keen Security Lab, which had previously demonstrated an exploit – since fixed by Tesla – by which Autopilot could be remotely compromised. In a new project, it explored ways by which the cars’ computer vision systems could be fooled, with varying degrees of risk as a result. In one exploit, the automatic windshield wipers of a Tesla Model S 75 running Autopilot hardware version 2.5 (and 2018.6.1 software) could be persuaded to activate using a so-called “adversarial” image. Tesla uses a neural network model to trigger the wipers, identifying raindrops building up on the glass. By building a special image, designed to confuse the neural networks’ prior learnings, that system could be confused. 4. Buying the biggest competitor in BeatsApple didn’t buy Beats by Dre to put Beats headphones out of business. But they sure as heck didn’t buy the brand solely for the streaming services they eventually turned into Apple Music. They wanted that it-factor and brand-name finesse. 3. The software/hardware connectionTwo of the top three products in the “Earbud & In-Ear Headphones” category on Amazon right now are Apple AirPods. The other is Apple’s EarPods with Lightning Connector. Two major reasons for this are included in Apple’s best-selling product: The iPhone.SEE TOO: Our AirPods 2 ReviewApple doesn’t hold back when suggesting that their products work best with other Apple products. They don’t hold back in suggesting that a user might want to consider buying a set of AirPods if they already own an iPhone – what better way to have the full experience? When you pair AirPods with your iPhone, an AirPods image indicator pops up on the display. It’s as if Apple is congratulating you on completing the hardware set. You’re applauded as a cool, loyal owner of Apple products.2. You probably already own an iPhoneAccording to the latest from The NPD Group’s Mobile Connectivity Report, one in four smartphone owners “waited more than three years to upgrade their last device.” Of those that DO plan on buying a new phone in the first half of the year 2019, more than one third plan on buying of the following “hero devices”:NPD Group defines “Hero Device” here as:• Apple iPhone XS• XS Max• XR• Samsung Galaxy S9• S10• Note 9SEE: Number three, the Software/Hardware connection. One product pushes the other. Now that we’re at a place where people like you and I are keeping phones for more than a year or two, the phones that are already in the hands of consumers dictate the sort of accessories that are bought over the course of the life of the phone.1. Every Apple product is treated like a heroOn that same list of best-selling earbuds, over on Amazon, guess where Samsung’s first entry comes in? Number nine. Samsung’s earbuds there are the Samsung Galaxy Buds, with wireless charging case. Samsung’s been far less ravenous when it comes to marketing their earbuds – almost as if they’re not following the same playbook as Apple when it comes to the whole “every single product is a hero” strategy. That’s the strategy that keeps you coming back time and time again. You want the ones that look like the stuff you’ve already got. You want the Crayola Crayons, the Band-Aid brand adhesive strips, the Roller Blade in-line skates. You want the Apple (insert product name here). Now, what’s next? Before we go any further, I want you to know that this is not an advertisement, and nobody at any company (especially Apple) compelled me to write what you’re about to read. I noticed today that several blogs had written about some AirPods discount or another – and passed it off as news. Besides the obvious affiliate angle, how did a discount about AirPods become news – and why do so many people care? Here are five reasons why Apple AirPods are so bonkers-level popular. Story TimelineJony Ive leaves Apple to start own design firmI’m glad Jony Ive is leaving AppleJony Ive’s legacy and life after Apple Over the past several years, Apple’s wireless earbuds became so extremely popular that they attained the same de facto must-own status as their larger, more expensive brethren, like the iPhone, and the MacBook. But how? Is it because of the hardware itself, or is it more about the products that surround and envelope consumer lives before AirPods purchase? How did Apple get to such a place of power over your cash?5. That tiny LED indicator lightWhen you plug a MacBook in with its power cord, a tiny orange or green light appears. This light has been appearing in its same (or nearly identical) form on Apple devices for many years. The light is one example of the long game goal achieved by Apple by repeating instances of good industrial design.AdChoices广告I know other companies use light in a way similar to that of Apple’s, indicating charging and/or hardware connections. Apple uses these LED lights as status symbols. It’s obvious that the AirPods themselves are important – they’re the main product – but with the charging light, Apple makes it clear that just as much work and craftsmanship went into the case as the earbuds. The same is true of the MacBook power cord over the past decade. Until Apple started releasing MacBooks with USB-C cables for charging, the MagSafe “L” and “T” shaped adapters showed they were delivering power with the same miniature LED (orange and green) as exists now in AirPods charging cases (now with white, too!). The friendliness of the orange is important. Notice how it’s orange, not RED, since red indicates emergency, while orange is just a lil’ nudge. Apple also does not want any product they sell to look in any way like it’s creating a demanding or difficult situation. The absence of a red indicator light is proof.I don’t mean to suggest that Apple sells more AirPods just because they’ve got an LED that shines orange and green. I do mean to suggest that it is with details such as this, Apple created a familiar product with which Apple-loving consumers felt at home.
